New herbal treatments for ornamental fish

Interzoo 2018 product novelties in detail

At the Interzoo, sera presented three new treatments, which are produced on a herbal basis: Phyto med Tremazid, Baktazid and Protazid. All products have in common that they are very well tolerated and highly effective at the same time.

Treating single celled skin parasites

Ornamental fish showing cloudy skin spots and separate slimy layers are often infected by parasitic single celled organisms. The white spot pathogen in freshwater fish (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis), for instance, causes small pustules. Other single celled skin parasites such as Ichthyobodo sp., Chilodonella sp. or Piscinoodinium pillulare in fresh water also lead to tiny spots on the skin. These ectoparasites can be treated with the new sera Phyto med Protazid. It contains highly effective quinine (as hydrochloride), obtained from cinchona bark, as an active agent. Protazid is also suitable for treating velvet disease (Amyloodinium ocellatum) or Brooklynella hostilis in marine water. The agent solution contained in the 100 ml (3.38 fl.oz.) bottle is sufficient for 650 - 1,100 liters (171 - 290 US gal.) of water.

External bacterial infections on skin and gills

Cloudy, whitish to bluish skin areas are caused by a bacterial infestations. It can become life threatening for ornamental fish if large areas of the skin are affected. External bacterial infections on skin and gills can be treated with the new herbal treatment sera Phyto med Baktazid. The highly effective thyme oil from Thymus vulgaris L. and Thymus zygis L. it contains combats bacterially caused skin inflammations by Aeromonas, Pseudomonas or Vibrio bacteria as well as fin and gill rot on ornamental fish in freshwater aquariums and in ponds. A safe diagnosis can be obtained by a microscopic examination of skin or gill swabs. sera Phyto med Baktazid is available in a 30 ml (1.02 fl.oz.) bottle for 400 - 600 liters (106 - 158 US gal.) and a 100 ml (3.38 fl.oz.) bottle for 1,300 - 2,000 liters (343 - 528 US gal.).

Treating skin and gill flukes

Skin and gill flukes are widely spread in fish and lead to skin lesions and secondary infections. Symptoms are fish scrubbing, clamping their fins and showing slimy spots on the skin. Skin and gill flukes can be treated effectively with sera Phyto med Tremazid. It contains highly effective and natural peppermint oil, which has been used in human medicine for a long time. Ornamental fish in both fresh and marine water can be treated with Tremazid. It has no effect on the biological filtration, is very well tolerated, can be broken down biologically and does not cause bacterial cloudiness of the aquarium water. Adjusting water parameters and a subsequent water change are thus not required.
