Fish as snail removers?

I have a 60 cm (23.6 in.) aquarium and would like to know which fish species will "take care" of snails. Fish stock so far: 2 Honey Gouramis, 6 Cardinal Tetras, 2 Peppered Corydoras, 2 Bronze Corydoras, 3 Black Widow Tetras.

Hello,

I can only urgently advise against adding fish as "snail killers"!

It usually concerns Clown Loaches and various pufferfish species. These fish are entirely unsuitable for aquariums of this size and/or with this fish stock.

Above all, you should reduce the food amount in case snails take over. Snail pests are almost always the result of feeding too generously.

You can collect the snails or siphon them off. It is important to remove every snail you see at least once a day, especially at the beginning ... and to have some patience.

You can also catch the snails with a trap (sera snail collect). However, snail traps should only be used under observation if air breathing fish (labyrinth fish, Corydoras catfish!) are present.

Finally, it is advisable to tolerate a certain number of snails in the aquarium. Snails (with the exception of very few species)definitely are not the pests they were considered 10 - 20 years ago, but - quite to the contrary - almost always quite useful and even beautiful aquarium inhabitants (please also refer to the FAQ "Combat snails with pufferfish"?).

Best regards
