A stable pH value in a natural pond, fish pond or Koi pond is essential for a functioning ecosystem. External influences, such as heavy rainfall or soft original water (low carbonate hardness), but also a high number of fish and plants influence the water parameters and destabilize the pH value. This can result in suddenly sinking pH levels, threatening the lives of pond inhabitants. The early indicator for a destabilization of the pH value is the carbonate hardness. Water hardness above 5°dKH is considered to be the lower limit for sufficient buffering, which reliably prevents excessive pH variations.
