Platies: How can I detect pregnancy, how often do the fish give birth?
I would like to know how I can see when the female platies will give birth. Do they behave differently then? How long after giving birth does it take until they give birth again?
Hello,
the unborn fry are visible as a gravid spot (a dark spot diagonally above the anal fin). Just before birth, even the eyes of the fry can be seen through the skin of their mother.
The femals show unusual behavior insofar that they tend to retreat a bit and possibly hide in dense growing plants just before giving birth.
Most of the time, it takes about 4 weeks to get new juveniles - but this also depends on the water temperature.
