Excessive sunlight can represent a threat to the pond ecosystem. Ornamental fish ponds and natural ponds with high levels of sunlight (UV-A, UV-B) or large shallow water zones can quickly become warm and cloudy. Pond inhabitants often react with stress to the light intensity and, in the worst case, can suffer a kind of sunburn. For this reason, a pond should ideally be designed so that at least a third of its area is in the shade. In natural ponds, it is a particular challenge for pond owners if they do not want to use algaecides or a filter system.
