Which pump performance for a 230 liter aquarium?

I want to set up a freshwater aquarium with 230 liters but am somewhat confused by different statements from retailers and aquarists concerning an external pump. My question: Is a pump designed for 250 - 300 liters sufficient in the long run, or should I - as a retailer suggested - rather purchase an aquarium pump designed for 500 liters?

Hello,

this mainly depends on the fish - i.e. whether you keep species from standing or slowly flowing waters or ones with a strong current. A general statement is therefore unfortunately not possible.

However, 500 l/h nominal performance of the pump (the actual performance is always lower, among others due to filter media, hoses, height difference etc. reducing the water flow) sound reasonable as an average for most common fish species.
